The Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit today alleging that the Russian government, the Trump campaign and the WikiLeaks organization cooperated in an extensive conspiracy to interfere with the 2016 presidential election campaign and to illegally influence the election in favor of Donald Trump.
Could this ring the death-bell for the Trump administration? Could this be the end for President Humpty Trumpty?
We think so.
This is the same sort of scenario that contributed to the fall of Richard Nixon years ago.
Of course, the wheels of justice tend to be slow, and lawsuits of this sort can take months to play out.
Considering the difficulty Trump has had getting a defense lawyer, the pressure and anger Trump has felt since the FBI raided his personal attorney’s office, and the continued pressure from the Mueller probe investigating possible collusion with Russia — Trump might well be finally facing enough challenges to try to resign his way out of the mess.
Thus far, nothing much seems to have been tied directly to Trump himself, so he has retained some level of plausible deniability. But, even the egocentric Donald Trump must surely be feeling the squeeze of having so many close family members, partners and associates who are currently in the sights of prosecutors, litigators, and opponents who are now circling in the waters, smelling the scent of blood.
It’s impossible to see how all of this reality TV show presented large in the world’s eye is going to ultimately play out. But, it seems very likely that there is some meat to this lawsuit, and the pricetag for whoever is left holding the bag will be really, really big.
