We tried translating “COVFEFE” from Russian using Google Translate, and guess what we got?!?
Google Translate transcribed “covfefe” to the Russian equivalent word, “совфефе”, and then translated that to the English word, “Soviet“.
Checking in with Dictionary.com, “soviet” is defined as either a noun or adjective:
noun:
- (before the revolution) any governmental council.
- (after the revolution) a local council, originally elected only by manual workers, with certain powers of local administration.
- (after the revolution) a higher council elected by a local council, being part of a hierarchy of soviets culminating in the Supreme Soviet.
adjective:
- any similar council or assembly connected with a socialistic governmental system elsewhere.
- (initial capital letter). Often, Soviets. a governing official or person living in the Soviet Union:
The Soviets have denied our charge.
We’re not really sure which definition President Trump intended when he tweeted out “covfefe”, but it seems sort of significant that he had “soviet” on his mind at midnight, doesn’t it?
